Recently as the weather has gotten colder I noticed when the Geo-thermal heating system turns off it makes a loud bang sound in the basement. Upon investigating it, I see that the pipe that takes the water from my open loop system to the outside shakes alot when the system shuts off. I tried to add additional strapping to minimize this, but it still happens and it seems to be getting worse. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is there something I can do to stop or reduce this from happening? My father-in-law also has a Geothermal system and he says his bangs too sometimes when it shuts off.

After talking to a Geothermal Contractor, he says that there is a shutoff value just outside the Geo-thermal unit that is suppose to turn off slowly after the unit shuts off. He says when it turns off too quickly, that is when you get the banging sound. He also says it's just an annoyance, nothing is wrong with the unit. Replacing the value should help allivate the issue.

Just an update on this issue, I had the Geothemal contractor replace the shut off valve with a slow closing valve and no more banging. The value makes a wheezing sound when the unit is shut off, but no more bangs.

Thanks for the update.  Does the new valve wheeze all of the time or just while closing?

Just when the unit is shutting off, before the bang was so loud we could hear it on the second floor. The Banging was causing by both the intake and output pipes vibrating when the unit shut off. I tried to secure the pipes with copper straps but it didn't help much. Now when the unit shuts off there is no vibrations from the pipes, no banging sound and the wheezing sound the new value makes is hardly noticable on the 1st floor and only lasts 3 or 4 sounds. The value is a slow close value, cost $160 installed.
