Well, it looks like my 25 year old pump has just died.  To make this worse, I will be selling the house in a month or two...

I discovered that my pump would not shut off and that the water to freon exchanger coil was all frosted up.  I shut the compressor off and let the coil thaw.  When i wentot restart the pump it kicks out the breaker in about 10 seconds.

So it looks like i burned up the pump.  I had a tech out to varify.  He checked the freon levels and says that there is water in the core and that a complete new unit is required.  Rats.

I would like to replace the heat exchanger and compressor and keep the rest of the old system.  This is on old TetCo unit.  It has a water to air cooler on it and an electric back up unit.  The unit worked well untill this happened.

The tech stated that he would not replace the parts and that he would only install a new unit.  he quoated about $8000 for the R&I of the unit.  It looks to me like a project that I could handle.  I have the skills and have worked on auto motive AC in the past.

Where can I buy the parts?   Is it a good idea to replace the parts?  What will a new unit cost.  I'm in the middle of nowhere Iowa so a quick trip to lowes is not quick.

I am guessing that to buy a complete new unit would be the easiest.  I'm guessing that the unit comes ready to run as soon as the water and elctricity are hooked up.

I think this would be your best bet

What will it cost for a 4 tonn unit?

My system is pump and dump. I have 6, 7 inch runs. The house is 1928, but has new windows, new siding, insulation and seems to be pretty tight and easy to heat. About 2000 heated feet plus unheated basement.

Where would I go to buy a unit? What time frame to get one in?

What should be the cost if i have the pro install?

Thanks for your help.

Where do you live?

It typically takes 4-6 weeks to get a heat pump made.

If you want to DIY there are a couple of websites on line where you can order one. I have never dealt with any of them so be careful.

You need a cupro nickle heat exchanger for a pump and dump system.

My guess is that if you hire this done, you can expect to pay $6000 to $10000.

Good Luck

If you buy from an installer, you will probably get a better warranty package.

I'm in north central Iowa, about 3 hrs from everywhere.

what's the bottom line price on a unit? Best brand, Ecosar(sp) or Bryant? What other brands are out there?

is there any value in the old sustem, it is a TetCo?

I have installed Florida, Climate Master and Water Furnace. These are only sold thru dealers. I can't tell you what is the best DIY brand. You are on your own there. I have never heard of TetCo until this thread. Most heat pump websites have a place where you can get info on a local dealer. I have seen several places on line that sell to homeowners. Some of them advertise on this site.

Here is one to get you started:
