We are goign to do geothermal with a vertical loop ...our question is what are the restrictions on distance to the house....we are in Ontario. We need three 180 ft holes drilled. They should be 10 feet apart but how far from the foundation do they need to be? Our concern is about the integrity of the house foundation but we want them close enough to the house so the distance of the tube to the heat pump unti isn't too far. Also, there is a drilled well on the property and how far away does it need to be from these holes?
Thanks!

I would go at least 20' from the house and 50' from the well.

Good Luck

Why so far from the well?

The original poster mentioned spacing the wells 10 feet apart.  If space permits, would it be better to space the HVAC wells farther apart than 10'?

10' is the minimun spacing on geothermal wells.  There are advantages to wider spacing is the area permits.

Why so far from the well?

Proper install procedures for a geothermal vertical loop call for the hole to filled from bottom to top with a bentonite grout.  This seals the hole  and keeps surface water from seeping down the hole and possibly contaminating the ground water.

If the loop was installed too close to a water well,  some of the grout could migrate to the water well.  Given the right circumstances,  the grout could seriously compromise the flow of the well.

The drilling process could also introduce a few contaminants to the water well. Though drillers take many precautions to stop this from happening, it is still possible. One precaution is to stay at least 50' away.
