I am going to build in Madison Co (central VA). Charlettesville and Fredericksburg are the closest big towns. We can only go closed loop here and like everyone else cost is a factor.  As I understand vertical drilling costs more (for one hole for well was $2K). I assume I would need approx. 5 vertical drops. Horizontal  slinky is the less expensive from what I know. But any horizontal vice vertical is not as stable (consistent) in temperature because of being closer to the surface.  The house is 2400sq main floor, with a full basement that will be particle finished (1800sq ft). Steep roof lines 12:12 pitch. I know insulation and building materials to be used are also a big factor for sizing any system. I am using the other forums to see pros/cons for SIPS/ICF vice wood. I am concerned like many here as to where our country is headed concerning energy. I have read about Climate Master, Water Furnace and Earthlink DX systems. I just am having a hard time finding some dealers/installers to talk to for comparison and the maintenance requirements after installation. I am not as savvy as so many of you are and would appreciate any help or advice.  THX ahead lisa

Hi Lisa,

I live in the Haywood area of Madison and may be able to help you out.  Last year I installed a ground source heat pump in my 2500sf Cape Cod home.   The great thing building a new home is that you can reduce the heating and cooling loads by constructing a well insulated house.   Has any one done a  'Manual J' to determine what the estimate heating / cooling load in order to determine the size of the heat pump?.

My email address is rgausman at vabb dot com.

Lisa, If you can't find local sources, contact manufacturers for a list of dealers. Make sure they do proper heat loads and keep us posted.
Good luck
