I pretty much know the answer to this, but I thought I get some of your thoughts on this. I have a Air Source heat pump for the second floor of my house, while getting prices for my replacement open source Geothermal unit from my downstairs unit, I got price for converting the upstairs unit to an open loop Geothermal as well. The contractor said I could keep the 2 1/2 ton Goodman Air handler unit on the second floor. He could then flip the refirgiant lines that run down the outside of the house to the compressor outside into the basement, extend them to a new water source compressor. Now I know the split systems are generally matched for the compressor and the air handler unit. Would it work? Absolutely, but at what cost of efficency? Would the few thousand I would save be enough to justify the lost efficency? And How big of a hit would I potentially take for replacing the 2 1/2 Goodman Air source compressor with a 2 1/2 ton Bryant Water Source compressor?

I guess I'd want to know the age and seer of the air-handler as well as your budget. Also is the existing system metered by txv or piston.
