Had the plumber that did the plumbing check out the unit He doesn't seem to familiar with geo-thermal. The installer is up north out of town. The green light is on, but the pump will not fire up. I notice it is trying to kick in as the lights in the house flicker and I hear a short buzz or hum and nothing else happens. It is quite cold in the basement without the infloor heat working, and its dam cold outside.

Any suggestions? I have a background in electronics so I am going to read up on it and hopefully my plumber guy can come back Monday and repair it (I hope) Of course we are having 40 people over on christmas day and I want it to be working for our first christmas in our new home.
Cheers

It sounds like you have a locked (stuck) compressor. The hum, click and dimming of lights is the compressor trying to start and going off on internal safety. When the internal safety cools down it tries to start again. Shut the power off to the unit. Any A/C tech you can find should have a hard start kit that attaches to the start capacitor and gives it an extra boost to free the compressor. |

What can cause a compressor to lock up or get stuck? |

I would start by checking the microfarad reading off of the capacitor, and refrigerant levels before adding a hard start |

Hey thanks for the input, I called the plumber today with no call back. I am hoping he is coming tomorrow. I was working on saturday when he came by so I didn't see exactly what he did. My wife tells me he went to the truck to read the manual a few times. UGH! I will keep you posted. I am wondering were I can get the manual for that unit, I will see if is online but I am sure the tech manual is something different.
Cheers!

1st thing to check is the capacitor, IMO. Plumber may not be trained / experienced with HVAC electrical problems. |

Well, I talked with my installer and basically told him to f-off. What a dick. He claimed I owed him money and was not going to come out to fix my water to water unit. I couldn't believe him pulled that crap, after I paid him over $40K and he says I owe him $250. WOW! His constant lying and delays cost me alot in electrical heating and propane heating during the final stage of my home. He damaged my home and and the neighbors siding when he tried to get his backhole between the houses to the backyard to tie in the wells to my home DEC 2007. After I BEGGED him to tie it in when I was backfilling in June. He even disconnected the neighbors natural gas meter (without permission) in trying to get the backhole past the meter. The headaches he caused was unfathomable and a complaint to the better business bureau is on the way. BTW, my installed to me he was no longer in the business of geothermal. Go figure.
Anyway, I contacted reputable company here in Edmonton. Their tech came out late last night, 7pm. He found that the run capacitor was hooped and checked over a few other things. He wasn't happy with the low well pressure and also the way one of the pumps was wired. This maybe the reason the run capacitor cacked? So he told me he would get the corrcet sized cap today and as of 2:30pm MST he called and told me he was on his way to my home. On christmas eve! I told him last night that it wasn't CRITICAL to get the unit running because it was xmas eve and there is more to life than fixing my unit instead of being with family. But alas, he is on his way and should be repaired in a couple of hours.
I believe a heathly tip is in order.....
