I am not an HVAC tech. so maybe someone here has an answer to my question. I have a Climate Master model # VT042GSSS25DESA. This is a 1994 3 1/2 ton Vertical 2 stage geothermal heat pump. I had to replace the 1st stage compressor on the unit. When I went to get the specs on the compressors I found that the first stage was a Tecumseh RK5515E and the second stage was a Tecumseh RK5518E, these are 15,000 and 18,000 btu compressors. That adds up to 33,000 btu at name plate specs. My question is how do they calculate this unit to be 3 1/2 tons? P.S. These are the original compressors. Thanks, Paul |

Individual compressor nominal BTUH ratings may be at conditions less favorable (higher pressures and temperatures) than conditions for ARI ratings. Moreover, ARI rating conditions were recently converted to metric numbers, and, if memory serves, the rounding off to whole metric (Centigrade) temperatures reduced BTUH ratings a bit more yet |
