I live in central PA. I had a Bryant 50YDV072 water to air Geo system installed in my house built in 2006, a year after I moved in (2009). My house was 3400 sq feet then, but I told installer I planned to finish the basement (another 1200 sq feet). Unit is 5 ton; installer ran additional ducting in basement. Total electric usage for Aug 2009 - July 2010 (with electric heat pump, before geo installed) was 35,898 kwH or 2992 kwH/month. After installation Aug 2010 - July 2011 was 39,464 or 3289 kwH/month. Aug 2011 - July 2012 was 35,722 or 2977 KwH/month. So far Aug 2012 - Jan 2013 is 20,194 or 3366 kwH/month. So as you can see, no real savings in spite of changing approximately 20- 75 watt can light bulbs from 75W to 12W after the first year too. Following suggested format: 1. Central PA (State College area). 2. Heat/Loss gain: not sure but here is all data from GeoDesigner: Bryant GT-PX Puron GeoDesigner is for Model 64, but changed to 72 on install. Heating run time 2498 hours Cooling run time 554 hours Heating Stage 1: 97% Cooling Stage 1: 100% Source Type: Horizontal CLosed Loop Soil Type: .90 - Damp Sand/Gravel Pipe Type: 1" IPS PD SDR 11 Avg Pipe Depth: 6 feet (Note...more like 5.5) Trench length: 960 feet Min Freeze protect; 10 deg F Max Source-Cooling 80 Deg F Avg Source-Cooling 63 Deg F Avg Source-Heating 30 Deg F Min SOurce-Heating 30 Deg F Soil Conductivity .90 Soil Diffusivity: .64 Loop Conductiviity: 2.22 Ave Costs Heating: $323 Cooling: $75 Water Heating: $236 Total Annual: $634 Obviously my average costs are near/over $300/month...no where near $634 per year. I don't have EAT LAT or EWT LWT, but will work to get. I now have three zones, main floor (usually at 68 or below in winter), 2nd floor (usually at 67 or below in winter) and now basement, just finished and thermostat off or at 63 or below for last few months. I also supplement with gas fireplace in evenings in family room ($300 in gas over last year). Family of four, with a grouchy light switch and thermostat monitor constantly on patrol. I bought Geo system so I wouldn't have to worry about heating/cooling. I'm having a "come to Jesus meeting" with installer on Friday. I've had him out several times after initial installation, saying I didn't seem to be getting any savings. He checks everything and tells me it is OK. I called him again last winter, with more data. He replaced the heating element in my water heater. He keeps saying all is right. He says it is physically impossible for the Geothermal unit to be causing such high bills...he is bringing an electrician to convince me it is other electrical usage. I don't think so. What should I ask him? What might be wrong? What should I expect electrical reduction to have been? No way I should expect an increase or no real decrease, right? Thanks, Sam

I'd love to help work through that but PLEASE consider editing post with some white space between smaller paragraphs for much better readability.

How do you get 3,000 hrs of heating and cooling for $634? Izzat everything on Stage 1, no ground loop pumping?

flynlion: Did they do any kind of heat loss analysis "Manual J" on your home before recommending the unit?  Or, was it an educated guess on their part?

I wouldn't rule out some faulty wiring or device somewhere. Here's some ideas:
1) Faulty wiring such as in back-up heating that isn't triggering the breaker for some reason, but is dumping into the earth ground.
2) Constantly cycling freezer, attic fan, well or sump pump.
3) Switch left on for gutter warmers or something not very noticeable.
4) Inaccurate electric meter

You can use something like the Kill-A-Watt to test for things that plug in like the freezer, but ask your electrician to check via ammeter at the breaker\circuit level to see if there are any irregularities in current draw.

For a rough check to determine if you have a continuous mystery current draw, find your electric meter and notice how fast the wheel is spinning. Turn off a breaker and then go look to see if it changed much. Continue doing this. You probably first want to unplug your fridge and other things though that cycle randomly.

Let us know what you find.

All, Acknowledged on poor readability. I knew my stream of consciousness was ugly and I attempted to add white space (and just made three attempts to edit) but no change. Perhaps there is a time delay and it will show up with a few paragraphs soon. Thanks for understanding my inability to edit or organize. I promise I had some English classes a few decades ago. However, I've separated this into four paragraphs with at least 3 spaces in between each and it is STILL all run together. Sam

I had 3 different installers come out and make proposals. I know at least one took many measurements and counted windows. They all proposed 4-5 ton units. I have two different GeoDesigner documents, but both are similar. On 3000 hours of heating and cooling for $634, those are just the numbers printed on the the Geo Designer sheet. So you are saying I should check to see if unit cycles to Stage 2 when necessary? And I should ensure there is ground loop pumping? Thanks, Sam

Sharter, Thanks for the suggestions: 1. I'll ask. 2. No freezer, no attic fan, well and sump pump seem to cycle normally (only occasionally). 3. Not gutter warmers, I do have a hot tub I'll look at with suspicion. 4. I'll see if I can involve electric company. Current draw...digital meter...but I'll see what I can do with it. Geo Installer is bringing an electrician with him Friday. I'll keep you posted. THanks, Sam PS. At least five spaces in this one...none are showing up.

I just switched from an Windows XP (using IE8) to a Windows 7 computer (using IE9), and I see the same problem. No amount of white space shows up. Wish I knew what's different. Will pass it along if I do learn what it is. Best regards, Bill

If I remember correctly, losing paragraphs has to do with the browser.  I know we have discussed and solved this problem in GBT forum.  I cannot get the search function to work but I seem to remember that clicking on Tools and then clicking on Compatibility View to turn it on solved the problem.  Maybe someone can remind us how to make paragraphs show up.  I know I had this problem after I changed browsers and someone on the forum told me how to correct.

those are just the numbers printed on the the Geo Designer sheet
I'm just wondering what data was in the little boxes in the program to generate those attractive numbers on a 6-ton system for you. What is your electricity cost per kWh? I'm also wondering if your energy usage projections included the loop pumping energy.

Was the home all electric airsource and auxiliary before or did you have oil, gas, or propane. A reasonable air source unit may have similar op cost to geo. installing a 6 ton instead of 5 raises questions. j

ICFHybrid, I'm not sure of the input numbers for the Geo Designer...all I have is the "System Summary." My Jan 2013 electricity bill says my "cost to compare" is 5.55 cents per kwH. I'd assume loop pumping energy was not included, but not sure. Sam

joe.ami, Home was all electric airsource and auxiliary before, 5 ton unit, installed in new home in 2006. Perhaps my expectation of savings was unfounded? Geo Designer provided indicated that my original system's (16 SEER - 2 spd- R410a)cost was: Heating $568; Cooling $215; Hot Water $351 Total $1134 Same Geo Designer shows Geo 50YD 064 as total cost of $643.

Well, those numbers are roughly compatible with what you were seeing before the changeover. 5-1/2 cents per kilowatt hour? We have a county out here that owns it's own hydroelectric dam and it can hardly put juice in the lines at that price.

All, First thanks for the pointers on white space. Second, I just realized I could upload docs. Attached are the Geo Designer pages relating to my install (although it is for 064 vice installed 072 model). Thanks Sam
