A vertical borehole for a planned geothermal system was drilled and grouted at my house last week. About 12 hours after the grouting was complete, the water from my domestic water well turned gray and cloudy. It looked like a very diluted version of the gray water that was pouring out of the geothermal borehole during the grouting. It has very gradually gotten less cloudy but it is still not completely clear as it had always been in the past. The geothermal borehole is about 35 feet from my well. Is it possible that the grouting medium has seeped into my well? If so, when this happens does it typically clear up or can it cause a permanent problem with the well? Thanks for any experience anyone can offer.

I don't know what is in the grout they use in vert geo wells but I would guess it is similar to cement. We swear when our neighbors (~250' away) put there well in it changed our water but who knows. The water in our well seems to change a couple times a year, mainly to from grass watering. When they start to water their grass for the season we can tell. We have high iron so we can tell changes by color and scent.
I am guessing your well will clear up. Just dump a ton of water(water your grass). Contact the well installer and get the msd's for what they used. Good luck

Yes grout can get from one well to another like that. Hopefully it will quit, as there is not an endless supply.

Thanks to both of you for sharing what you know. I'll continue to monitor it and hopefully it'll eventually clear out.

Just for the information of anyone who may find this thread in the future: the water did eventually clear up completely after a few weeks, and has remained clear since (despite several heavy rains). I got varying advice about how often and how long to run the water but the general consensus seemed to be, run as much water as you can without drawing the well down to the point it’s near empty.
