Hi,
I have a five ton geothermal heat pump that has just been placed and connected to the ground loop (vertical borehole, closed loop). It is not yet powered up, pending completion of electrical and ductwork. There is a small amount of oily liquid pooled at the base of the unit. The amount visible around the edge of the base would be tablespoons, not cups or gallons. It has the texture of a lightweight oil.
The installer came out to check it at my request and identified it as a small amount of loop mix that can escape when the unit is connected/disconnected to the loop.
Questions:
1) does that diagnosis make sense?
2) is there a way to measure if the amount of fluid that leaked has any implications for the system?
3) can lost fluid be replaced if needed?
4) is there a way to measure going forward if there is more leakage (other than just looking for it on the floor)?
In short, is this likely a non-issue, or something that’s a potentially serious problem in need of further investigation? All questions I’ll also ask the installer, but I would appreciate any insights or experience. |
