I am very interested earthships and found a March 2007 with details of the structure. Does anyone know if a life-cycle analysis has been recorded for an average earthship?

Dirtbag,  I am also looking into building an earthship in southern AZ.  My wife and I visited Greater World in Taos in mid March and stayed in on of the earthship rental units.  We also toured the new Phoenix house which I must confess is totally awesmoe.  We spent two nights in the studio house and totally fell in love with the entire earthship concept.  The earthship stayed very comfortable, high 60's at night even though it was in the low 30's outside.  We live in PIMA county and are currently working with a realator to purchase land where we can build our earthship.  While two nights is by far not enough time to make an educated decisio, we were convinced that the concept of an earthship home is the way to go for us.  Our plan is to sink a well as a secondary means of water for the home. Other than that we will be off the grid.  We are playing with the idea of connection to an electric power provider but only to sell unused power back to the grid. As soon as we find property we plan on contacting Michael Reynolds for a consoltation and to help up design our dream home.  We plan on building a 3 BDM home with a great room.

Feel free to contact me

Seems like it'd be really hard to control moisture in the walls.

My parents were hippies, I've seen a lot of dark musty alternative houses. The pictures on the above links bring back memories. I grew up with an outhouse and no running water.

The novelty wears off.

I'm planning on being off-grid myself, and very energy efficient with lots of thermal mass. But I'll build above ground, have modern appliances, adequate lighting, and 8ft minimum ceilings. Composting toilets that actually flush and don't leak nasty vapors. I bet my house will be just as efficient, if not more. And it'll smell a lot better inside.

Trash belongs in landfills or recycling, not in the landscape leaching toxic substances into the soil.

Awe comon.....

Adobe houses have been around for years, and green building is becoming more and more of a must in the consruction field.

I'm with you on the landfill comment in regards to using recycled pop cans or old tires as part of the construction. Definatley try to include some newer technologies.

I have the earthship books and the dvd. I want to build a circular one someday and have a icf basement. I've made amodel out of circular foam blocks. U can get at a hobby store.  I like the concept of making a enviormental home. But i don't like the security of the ones built into the side of the hill.  In the country it'd be fine but not in the city.  I know they build them into the side of a hill for thermal mass.  They even use a certain slope for the glass windows depending on your lat. or long. and the rotation of the earth in the winter time.  To get the most natural heat from the sun.  I like the domes they made out glass bottles and cans.  Some even use a solar toilet to incinrate waste which i thought was cool.
