Help!! My heating contractor missed with his hole sole and cut 8 inches out of my 14 inch ijoists. Is there anyway to fix this? Could I glue and screw some plywood from each side and redrill the hole? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

First, how many did he cut, did he cut the flanges, what are their spacings and span? |

You need to talk to iLevel (Weyerhaeuser) who makes the joists, not seek advice on a forum. |

I had some problems with my plumber drilling through my main support beam and technical support where I had purchased my joists and trusses looked after everything for me. Just call them and they will help or know where to send you. They will have to make up engineered drawings and specifications. Mine did it for free but if they charge you just bill it back to your contractor.
I learned that you really have to keep an eye on anyone that comes in to your house. My gas fitter was going to drill through the ends of 12 joists to run a 2" gas line even after I told him where it was going to go. He said he does it all the time in high end homes. I told him he's probably wanted for millions of dollars in structural repairs.

It is usually easily fixed, but the details have to come from your supplier, don't worry, they have probably seen everything imaginable. |

The heating contractor didn't "miss" anything. He was a typical uncaring tradesperson who will never learn about his errors UNTIL he is backcharged for fixing something. By the way, some I-joists allow almost full cutouts except for maybe a 1/2" of web top and bottom. This does depend on location relative to bearing, so check with your supplier. |

a great example of why you can't leave subs unsupervised on a job, it is the reason why frame inspections usually follow plumbing, electrical and HVAC rough inspections; to ensure the structural components have not been compromised. I feel your pain!
I would certainly seek help from outside this forum from your engineer or the joist supplier's engineering/tech support. But, definitely back charge him for your expenses |
