Hi there,
My wife and I recently completed a modified stick frame straw bale building with a earthen/lime stucco finish in PEI, Canada.
We have found the combination of earthen base coat and lime finish coat is not so great in the freeze thaw cycles in our climate and the differential in the expansion contraction rates between these layers is causing the top coat to delaminate.
We are going to go with a mechanical rain screen over top of the existing tied into the framing beneath the stucco this summer. Hopefully things go well, we are using cleats on the 19"c/c studs, 5/8" OSB, tarpaper and cedar shingles.
Anyone else have experience with this detail?
