"Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition" is in our area this week, building a house.  They tore down a 500 sq ft house & are building a 3000+ sq ft house on the same lot.  The entire project is being done in 105 hours!

Link below to some photo galleries of the project, if anyone is interested..

based on the track record of the show, it wouldn't surprise me.    I debated whether to post this, only because I could see it devolving into a "political" discussion.  Personally, I have a hard time with lots of things that happen on that show.  It comes down to ABC doing what it takes to get good ratings rather than doing what's in the best interest of the people they're "helping".  But that's probably going down the road I just said I didn't want to go down..

The thing I really want to know is, how the heck do they build a house that fast?  What's the quality really like?

I have no idea but I could give you a clue on the quality of people and how well they keep their house up on an infill Habitat for Humanity house. But as you said, let's get off of that and back to Personal Responsibility!!

That program makes people feel good for the short term. Then reality sets in. Upkeep, taxes, insurance,... why build people some mega dream home when all they need is basic affordable housing. Because of ratings. Enough said.

I know people who have worked on these houses. They build fast by getting numerous people in each trade. Painting, for instance; where you may have a crew of 3, they'll have 25 using fast dry paint scheduled for at 3 - 4:30AM. I think they attempt to build it well, and probably concentrate on the final stages where its going to show up on camera. As for - is it really done well? Would you want a house built that way, where no one contractor has control over anything or is going to take responsibility when the job is done"?

I agree with Bob that they probably just concentrate on the main areas (kitchen, living room, master bedroom) and the unfinished areas won't really be shown on TV.

I'd be curious to see the state of the house even just 3 months after and see how well it's been maintained or if any cracks are appealing.

Thanks Jason for sharing this.
Designs shouldn't just be aesthetically pleasing, but also environmentally friendly.

Arent the mortgages covered by the sponsors? As far as quick build time I'd say the new structure was much better than the old one
