Seeking an insulation for severe chemical sensitivities...wondering about Ecobatt
www.ecobatt.us
The only thing I can tell so far is that they are impossible to reach!

Never seen them- the hype seems to as much about the 30% recycled content a the binder content. I'm not convinced it has anything to offer over rock-wool batts (or better, blown rock wool, which NEEDs no binders, etc.), and is 100% recycled material. |

None of the insulation companies that I talked to about options mentioned the rock wool - I don't know why. I'd love more information on it. Is it just straight up wool? If so, those I got priced out of...and were treated with flame retardant, too! |

Rock wool is spun slag from steel making. It looks a bit like fiberglass, but it's 1.5-2x more dense. Roxul may be the biggest N. American manufacturer. They make both blown & batt versions as well as other rock-wool based building materials. See: http://www.roxul.com/home There are other players as well: http://www.thermafiber.com/?Page=Contact+Thermafiber&id=35&p=14 http://www.amerrock.com/index.shtml http://www.deltainsulation.com/prod_indust.html The stuff is pretty itchy compared to cellulose or even fiberglass, but that's mainly an issue for the installers. Outgassing of VOCs simply doesn't happen with this stuff (they went up the flue at the blast furnace). Some goods will contain a minute amount of starch or mineral oil (ask, or look up the spec sheets) as binders to keep dust down for installers. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_wool

This seems strange but I can't find anyone who does rock wool or even carries it in our area (Colorado). Not even in our state.
Why would that be??
