Hey guys, I'm just looking into software packages to learn with with regards to building my next home. As I have over 30 years of building experience, I would like to spend my retirement years designing homes instead of building them. Is there any software packages you would recommend? I am pretty PC-Savvy and I'm a fast learner. Builders Hamilton

derek59: Yes! I strongly recommend you look into Softplan. Good system, originally developed by builders so it is understandable and pretty easy to use. There is free technical support and more important, a FREE Softplan users' group which is extremely helpful - SOFTPLANSPLASH.ORG. Fast accurate 2D, and 3D. Customizable if you have your own wall system for instance, or odd windows or roof details. There is also a softplan user's facebook page: "spline".

I use DataCAD for all my architectural drawings. Once you learn the GUI, it really flies.

I'll second Chief Architect. Very easy to learn, fast results once setup, good fast 3d generator for client sales meetings. I've never demo'ed Softplan though. It seems like Chief and Softplan are the 2 best programs. Chief also has the Chieftalk forums which can pretty much answer any questions from actual users you may have.
