Hi~ We own a 1961 brick ranch near Denver and would like to insulate it. My limited understanding is that we have drywall with perhaps a 4-6 inch gap between it and the brick. Might be less. We have no attic/crawl space above the house and a crawl space below the house that ranges from 3 to 6 feet deep. What would be the best way to insulate it? Thanks, Maura

It is likely framed with 2x4's, so the logical place to start with the walls would be to fill them with insualtion, probably cellulose. Since the walls are inaccessible from the exterior they'll have to drill holes in the sheetrock (or plaster) to access the cavities. Insulating the roof is very important; is the roof flat, or sloped? I assume that the ceiling follows the roof slope? Either way, it is likely framed with 2x6's (5") 2x8's (7") or 2x10's (9") so the goal will be to fill those spaces with insulation. They'll have to access the space from either the interior ( plaster) or exterior (shingles), so plan on patching the interior or patching/replacing shingles. If the shingles need replacing anyway, go that route, and consider adding exterior insualtion while your are working on it. Since I'm a northener, there may be imputs from otehrs more familiar with your climate.
