Hi there

This is my first post.

I'm beginning my first ever remodel on a townhome in Los Angeles. It is undergoing remediation for mold, then everything will need to be replaced. I understand this is a DIY forum, but I'm in need of a good contractor. My husband will be undergoing a bone marrow transplant and I will now have to deal with everything myself. I have no prior experience. I do work with film crews so I have dealt with people working in a professional matter... so don't panic for me yet.

Does anyone have any leads on a "reliable" and "honest" contractor in LA? I know I'm asking for a lot.

I have met 3-4 people already, but I'm not 100% sold yet on any of them.

Thank you so much in advance.

Jen

Hi, Jen
I used to live in Los Feliz, right near Griffith Park, and certainly it is difficult to find reliable, honest, and sometimes legal contractors in the city. I don't know in the manner that you met the 3-4 people you have, but if they aren't referred they may be suspect. I might check online sites that have reviews of the quality and reputability of Los Angeles roofing contractors, or remodeling, or whatever job that you are in need of; so that you don't get ripped off or have sub-par work done. Good Luck!

I'd ask for the names of the last 5 jobs and then check dates to make sure that it is reasonable. I suspect that everyone has some jobs that turned out fine - but you want to find out how the "unexpected problems" jobs turned out.

I had excellent results using Angie's List in a big city like LA. I used that approach for painting contractors, garage door contractors, driveway replacement, electricians, and landscapers, and was pleased with all of them. The cost to access the list was reasonable, seems like about $6 a month, and it can be cancelled anytime. Maybe there was an initial fee, but I cannot remember. You could consider that approach in the initial selection, and then follow up with jonr's suggestion.
