We are building a new home and we are just about to go for quotes on our windows and doors. However, we have some questions on choosing windows.

We have a walk-out basement which means that the windows on the basement level are near the ground. Also, we are working toward a craftsman style of house.

1. From a style point of view, can we have both casement, fixed and double hung windows in the house without it looking strange? For example, we were considering casements on the main (upper) floor for better ventilation. However, we are also looking at using a few double hung windows as well (living room, front bedroom, master bath).

2. Are there any rules for choosing one type of window over another?

3. Is there a significant energy advantage of one type of window over another?

4. What is the best material for prairie grill bars (cost and looks)? Do prairie grills add a lot to the cost?

Thanks.

Brian.
