We are a window installer in Toronto. One of our suppliers debates with us about what is long-term better for the environment: double pane window or triple pane window. In regard to offering it to our ultra off-grid minimalist customer base. The insulation factor from a third pane is not 50% more energy savings. It is only marginal; small. And the third pane obviously requires more material and expense. When our customers ask, we are trying to find more information to give them showing that high-end double-pane windows with proper films and frame insulation is nearly as good than the third pane. Has there been studies on this? - Mike

Here from Michigan.....First I will say is you Canucks build way better windows then our lack luster US suppliers.....

We imported our Inline windows from your area in Toronto and love them.....We took a vacation weekend to Toronto and they gave us a nice tour of the plant, they extrude the fiberglass frames onsite, paint, and assemble.

We couldn't justify the cost of triple pane windows. With a correctly built house and the solar gain option with the coatings we just stayed double pane.

There is one company that has the majority of the patents for glass coatings ( Cardinal Glass I think ? ) and it is pretty much with double pain windows there is 4 surfaces they can be coated.

So for south facing windows they we single coated, north facing 3 coating, east and west 2 sides coated.

Many are thinking now a days the money saved in cheaper windows can buy lots of solar panels that can more then make up the savings from windows.
