Hi,

Our workshop is split level, the upper level has sky lights and gets passively heated, however even in the summer the lower level remains too cold. I want to find a way to raise the ambient temperature of the lower level. Unfortunately the whole building is unheated and uninsulated and as a rented property we are unlikely to do that work ourselves. The upper level has skylights but the lower has no windows. The two spaces are separated by an airtight door.

I wondered if I could rig an industrial blower to draw warm from the ceiling of the upper level to the lower level down 8" flexible ducting? I suppose i'm wondering if the accumulated circulation of warmer air over several hours per day could raise the general room temperature downstairs even by a few degrees to make it a more conducive work environment.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Unless the temperature difference is large, moving heat around using air as the working fluid is very inefficient. How cold is it near floor level downstairs, and how warm is it a foot or so from the ceiling upstairs?

Is the air tight door separating the spaces required for fire control?
