We are looking for suggestions for energy efficient general/ambient lighting for a concrete patio.  The patio size is roughly 24' x 29' and is positioned in the "L" that is formed where the house and garage meet.  That is, the house and garage border two of the adjoining sides of the rectangular patio.  There are currently 3 outdoor fixtures that can pivot to a certain extent.

The first light is on the garage wall, approximately 8 feet high and located about 8 feet away from the corner of where the garage and house meet.  The switch is inside the garage (not very convenient).  The fixture takes a standard size light bulb.

The second light is on the house wall, approximately 9 feet high and located about 12 feet away from the corner of where the garage and house meet.  The switch is close to the door that leads out to the patio (very convenient).  The fixture takes a standard size light bulb.

The third light is on the house wall, approximately 19-20 feet high and located about 29 feet away from the corner of where the garage and house meet.  The switch is close to the door that lead out to the patio (very convenient).  I have no idea what type of bulb is in this fixture.  It is shaped like an elongated egg.  When turned on, it takes several minutes for the light to get to full intensity, and does this gradually.  From the ground, it appears to be the same style and base as the other two fixtures, but I could be mistaken.  Whatever bulb goes in this fixture, or the replacement fixture, it would need to have a long life since I don't like to climb 20 feet to change a light bulb.

I would prefer to reuse these three fixture locations, but not necessarily the same fixtures.  We want something that will be energy efficient and possibly turn themselves off when not in use.  Not sure if motion sensors would work well given that we may be staying in our chairs for a stretch of time (maybe IR sensors).  If the lights will attract bugs, the first and third lights would be best to use since they are farther away from the back door to the house.  Any suggestions?

I could not suggest you a perfect patio lighting bulb, however, if you really want to save energy efficiently for your concrete patio then you can use any flourescent type lamp.

There are also other way to automate your lighting system so that you can save power consumption especially when no one was inside the patio using it. There are electronic light sensor available in the market and there are also group that offer installation for this purpose.

I hope this could help you somehow..

Well, for a long lasting light bulb, LED would be the best choice for your outdoor  lighting in your patio. You may also consider solar lights since you are after energy efficient.  And I suggest you can add some patio lantern or tiki torches  for some accents
