I have been building normal houses for awhile now and I am trying to get into building net zero homes. Right now, I am trying to write a business plan, but I cant find any market research on net zero building. Could anybody point me in the right direction or help with a business plan?

You might consider an intermediate step of low energy homes before you go to net zero. |

Where are you? There probably aren't enough ZEH built yet to get good info on sales, but you can find lots of info online for 'how-to". I assume you've Googled ZEH? Spend some time on the GreenBuildingAdvisor website as well as the Building Science Corp website, and the PassiveHouse-US website. "Transformations" in Mass is building and selling developments of ZEH. You need to understand building science - moisture management, types of insulation, potential problems etc, etc before building these houses or you could be opening yourself up to huge liability - its easy to make simple mistakes which could lead to expensive problems and/or catastrophic failures. Its much more involved than developing a business plan. You've just missed the NESEA convention in Boston where there were lots of builders speaking about the ZEH they've built. There may be more conventions or seminars coming up in your area; they are the single best resource available. |

Roscoe,
Here is a link to a guy that does them in my area. He has built somewhere in the area of a dozen of these.

Roscoe, What is it that you really want to do? There is a big difference between net-zero and zero energy homes. One is adding a large PV array to make a relatively normal home net to zero use. The other is building a home that is self-heated and cooled and uses 80 to 90% less energy than a standard home and having a PV system that only handles the 10% energy load left over. Net-zero typically has a long payback period. ZEH has an immediate ROI because the utility savings are greater than the upgrade costs added to the mortgage. If you use Holistic Integrated Design using Engineered Natural Systems (H.I.D.E.N. Systems) approach the home also can be built with no additional initial costs. Brian |

I've been reading a lot about this and I bumped into this article entitled : More builders crafting net zero homes caught my attention a while ago. Well it's true that power bills are annoying.Nobody likes them but unless no one is willing to live without electricity. Our generation is blessed that we can use other alternative in powering our appliances without spending on sky-rocketing bills. Thanks Mr. Sun! |

As an architect I am in the process of flushing out a definition for ZNEB in the form of a building design set of guidelines, which is difficult without measuring science (NIST is working on a system). I've attempted to draft a definition on a website I've developed for this purpose. I've provided links to support my conclusions backed up by 3 years research. I welcome all concerned to visit, review, and comment on my effort to help advance the cause. There are two pages on the site; one illustrating an example of a ZECB and the other page is a draft of my definition of ZNEB. Here's the link https://sites.google.com/site/zeroenergyconceptbuilding/home
