OK, a couple of years ago, I ordered some PU insulation called Puren from Germany for manufacturing. It was supposed to be equiv of 30lbs/ft3 and it came in a 3lbs so no good for my process but great for my outside wall insulation and I have 100m2 of it at 1.5" thick. Here are a photo of my project, I will put Tyvek and a rainscreen over which i will put wood clapboard. The question is about the bug screen detail where the insulation/clapboard meets the soffit. Not too sure how to do it. Any suggestions? |

Looks interesting. I'm a little confused though. Is the brick the matte gray material, on the inside of the house?

The brick is not seen. I put 2x2s horizontally with one layer of insulation between, then screwed the vertical 2x2s to it with more insulation between to reduce the thermal bridging. I haven't finished the second layer of insulation yet. Here is an older picture. |

I see, so you're insulating over the outside of the building, and then putting siding over it? Looks like an old building. Let me guess - 1920s? |

Very close, 1918 with a crappy amateur pointing job on the brick which is one excuse for insulating it. The dog is a 4 month old Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever. Very smart dude. Like a border collie with an off switch (If you know how border collies are, you will understand). I've built a couple of adobe and rammed earth homes 15-20 years ago here in Ontario and worked on a tire house so I like the organic nature of your place.

As far as the soffit interface, I would think you could just run a piece of your 2x2 horizontally, under the soffit, and just frame your 2x2's to it. But this is too simple, and I'm probably missing something. You didn't include a pic of that area, did you? |

One of the guys in my office has one and brings her to work most days- she's just about sweetest dog EVER! She's kind of like a scaled-down golden retriever but with a bit more personality. Definitely not the animated & obsessive-compulsive herding instinct of border collies, but way more than the self-moving-throw-rug characteristic of some goldens. |

so...suppose you wanted to do this same thing, but have a stone/stucco finish. Would you have to sheet the outer most furring strips first, and would they be able to support the weight? |

I've been talking a lot to a very reputable stucco company about this. For both stucco and stone, you would use plywood or OSB over your framing, and then black paper over that. For the stucco, you would then use chicken wire, a brown coat, and a final color coat. For the stone, you would use the finer diamond mesh, some type of cement adhesive per the stone manufacturer's recommentations, stone, grout and sealer. |
