Good point, I agree. Caulk can only take so many heat/cold cycles before the bond breaks. Although newer caulk technologies have made some caulks last a long time. Caulk around windows usually fails within 3-5 years.
Mechanical fastening and flashing is best. A galvanized channel will last a lifetime.
There was a thread I made about Tyvek that showed the original Tyvek (1980's) deteriorated quite a bit after 15 years when they opened the wall. It basically failed and stopped working long before any damage was made known. Supposedly the newer Tyvek is stronger and better. Time will tell.
With tapes, it seems as though the Euro tapes did best as they have been in use in Europe quite a bit longer than what we have here in the States. Although DOW, DuPont and others are making some great tapes also. As with any adhesive. It's all about correct prep work and correct application.
