Hello gents

I'm looking for a stud finder that can locate ties in a finished wall.  I've got a junk $20 unit and a $100 Bosch and neither one of them is any good.  I'm working on hanging some of those Rubbermaid closet organizers and am having a hard time.

No chance of those cheap magnet things finding a drywall screw and going every 6 or 8" to the next web?

Or using the screw in type drywall plugs that have a capacity of 75lbs?

I was going to suggest the magnet approach also. Drywall plugs would be iffy for Closetmaid, in my thinking. An alternative would be to use an anchor into the concrete.

galnar, what part of the closet system are you looking to install, the header type channel that the shelf support channels hang from? If so, I suggest you take a hard look at anchoring into the concrete. If you're hanging closet rods keep in mind that clothes are quite heavy. The anchors I've used, and really like, are the Redhead 3/8" drop in threaded anchors. You drill a 1/2" hole in the concrete and push the anchor into it, then use a 1/4" rod and hammer to set it. Then use a 3/8" bolt of whatever length needed. With these anchors you don't have to be concerned about getting the hole depth just right, just deep enough to be solid. The 3/8" size of bolt may be an issue, but unfortunately the anchors don't come smaller.

Yes, it is that type of system. I thought about using those Redhead anchors but the holes in the header are only 1/4". I could probably drill them out a little bigger but I'm trying to reduce the amount of extra work! I will try the magnet trick, didn't even think about that one.

I don't have to hit a tie with every hole, but it's pretty easy once you find one. The holes are spaced 6" apart and my ties are 6" on center so it's easy to get a good sturdy application. I keep running out of screws because they only give you enough to hit studs 16" OC!

Thanks for the advice
