This month marks our second year anniversary in our ICF house and the experience has been great. Absolutely no complaints (other than when I had to drill a 6 inch hole in a wall for a duct I failed to plan for...) I have lived in both SIP and ICF, while I have no complaints against the SIP, the added benefit of living in a concrete house in tornado alley (KC area) provides an added sense of security.
I'm still amazed at our utility costs. We had diner last night with friends. Their house is very close to our house in square footage. They keep their AC set to 84 degrees and their electric bill was $333 last month. We keep ours set at 72 and our electric bill was $237. And we have had similar experience with other homes comparing both winter and summer bills. The energy efficiency is unbelievable!
I wanted to take a minute to thank many of the pros that post on this forum. I would not have been able to build this house without their help in answering numerous questions throughout the process. While I may never meet you, rest assured knowing there is a guy in Kansas who is very thankful for your willingness to take the time to share your expertise with a novice.
Many thanks,
Dug

Dug, I know we all appreciate your results, if your friends agree could you post a month by month cost report between the two homes along with the average temp? This is one of the great selling features we use.

My house is 4400 sq ft. Not sure of the average temp last month, but trust me when I tell you, it was HOT! Location is 20 miles west of Kansas City and KCP&L provides my electric (dunno what I pay per KW.)
I have never charted my house compared to another. I do compare when the topic comes up in casual conversation and I have always been substantially lower.

Does your bill show how many kw you used?

If I may attach to your thread... We are also for a bit more than 2 years in our ICF house and also very satisfied. One of the things I like the most is the thermal mass. Not sure about your design, but in addition to the ICF walls our house has concrete slabs on both levels, a passive solar design and about 1" of exterior traditional stucco. We heat 100% with wood, except the water which we heat electrically. We don't have central A/C but 3 portable A/C, one at the ground level and 2 upstairs. We hardly use them. Electrical bill is around $100-$120 a month, this may even go down when we move to use smart meters and heat the water tank at night. The house is 3600 s.f. near Ottawa, Canada. I also send my thanks to the pros on this forum.
