Hi All.

Abridged version: I am looking to build a small earth sheltered home, 1500 sq ft GLA (ANSI exterior measurements) in the North East. Very early in the planning phases. I need a complete building system (walls and decking) that can be covered in soil (ie. a green roof). I’ve narrowed it down to two different systems. QuadLock/Deck and BuildBlock/Deck.

-With BuildDeck it seems to “cap” the BuildBlock wall. Is it possible to keep laying BuildBlock courses past the BuildDeck to create a 2’ foot parapet wall?

-I’ve read that BuildBlock is labor intensive, but the information was years old. How true is that now? Compared to Quadlock?

-To reduce labor and effort is it better to match BuildBlock dimensions (no block cutting) to the structure or to match the BuildDeck (no deck cutting)? I believe the walls would be greater savings, but have no construction experience with ICF so just checking.

Thanks!

I think you have it backward. I have done Buildblock and an older brand. I thought Quadlock was more labor intensive.

I concur with Newbostoncont's assessment. Buildblock is about as easy as it gets. If you use a larger block like Nudura, it might get easier. You don't even need to use clips with BuildBlock to keep the block from floating during the pour. Most of the labor associated with ICF is setting up and taking down the bracing and scaffolding system and NOT placing the block anyhow.

Thanks for the clarification. I know BuildBlock advertises as a labor savings (not to mention their videos make it look easy) so that is why I was surprised to read that elsewhere and questioned it.

Have either of you designed or worked with their BuildDeck product?

Not us. We don't have hurricanes or tornadoes in our area. So we use wood or steel trusses for our roof construction.
