SIPS Co (Australia) manufactures SIPS with MgO skins & EPS cores. We have situations where we require acoustic (sound walls) in accommodation unit applications: ie adjoining domestic buildings. We've acoustically tested with different MgO thicknesses in double wall situations with mineral wool in cavity: ie 12mm/90mm/12mm - 75mm mineral wool batts- 12mm/90mm/12mm. We are still not able to meet Code requirements. The acoustic engineers recommend we need more mass in the walls as the low-end frequencies is where the system falls down......this testing is proving very expensive. Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers; Steve

Steve have you tried using higher density EPS for this section of the project?

Hi Fergie,

Our standard EPS is @ 13kg/m3. It was suggested to use a lower density. One wall section has this @ 10kg/m3, whereas the other is at 13kg/m3......Do you think both walls should be a lot denser?

How about a triple lamination with an extra MGO board centered in the thickness of the foam core of the SIP. That will add mass and the extra change in material density will impede the sound energy.

Hi Simon,
Yes we have done that ie: 12mm/42mm/6mm/62mm/12mm 20mm air gap 8mm/72mm/8mm.

Came close, but it was the low end Hz that killed us.

Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve,
Well I cannot say for sure it would work perhaps use a FEA Analysis and see what comes out. I am not a engineer or designer we did do a project a few years back in Mexico a hotel and the designer used 30Kg/m for the floors OSB type SIPs. I remember asking why and he said that the STC ratings and strength were both factors.
I am looking for STC ratings now on some of the products but do not seem to be having luck from the factories as of yet, still early morning here in the M.E. so I might get some replies later if I do I'll post the numbers.
