What are my options when finishing the roof when using M-SIPs? I talked to a few roofing guys at a H&G show this week and they where clueless. Metal sips are not common up here so no one really has much experience with it. Im up in Colorado by the way.
Ideally we would like to use comp roofing as it fits in with most the roofs around here. Standing seam is nice but not always a good fit in some neighborhoods. |

Brian,
all attachments roofing or siding are with screws, or adhesive (in the case of peel n stick underlayments or attaching cement barrel tiles to underlayment) |

Roofing felt not required?
travisbirch, If the roof is simple , The metal SIPs are already water tight, then the shingles are only applied for cosmetic reasons and felt is not required. If the roof is more complicated with valleys, etc. then felt is required, |

In my opinion, if the roof deck is penatrated by fasteners best practice is to use felt or a peal and stick membrane. Even with metal SIPs. Composite Shingles can also be glue applied. then a membrane is not necessary over metal SIPs. |

Here's a detail.
JeffD, In theory this works, but from a practical point How does one glue it and then walk accross it, It would be sliding all over the place? |

I agree, gluing it is a formula for nothing good and a lot of pain and time. I don't mind putting ice and water shield on the entire roof. We are not looking at the metal roofing that looks like comp. 50 yr roof with a classic look |

So when installing a standing seam metal roof onto a metal SIP, would one have to screw down the one layer of 30 lb felt and then screw the standing seam metal roof onto the metal SIP? Roofing underlayments are usually nailed down and then they come back and install the roofing material, be it asphalt shingles, standing seam or whatever.
Is using a roofing material like VersaShield which is a UL Class A rating roofing underlayment a good idea on a steel SIP roof or is it overkill? I can't find if VersShield is approved to apply onto a metal substrate like that of a steel SIP. It just lists OSB/plywood.

Asphalt shingles,.........................................
What is the spacing on the SIP screws, are they at 12" oc? Do you have any install pics of a standing seam metal roof? On a standing seam metal roof most roofers are use to screwing into OSB. How and what type of screw do they have to use for a steel SIP to prevent it from stripping out? |

Lbear, It appears in this picture the spacing is 12" , but spacing may vary from 6" - 12" depending on the engineering requirement for uplift on standing seam roofs a #8 or #10 sharp point screw is used in both OSB and steel skins the screw used to hold the asphalt shingle is a #8 x 9/16" wafer head screw, the head is the same size as a roofing nail |

Lbear, we have actually nailed the felt with ring shanked simplex nails or used tin tabs with screws, I think the VersaShield is better suited for wood, we prefer Polystick MTS over all underlayments |
