The ERV is the correct choice. If you ever need to dehumidify or humidify - go with the ERV.... unless you have a room with a pool (open source of lots of water)... and the need is always to dehumidify (then HRV).

When comparing units, check HVI data. This is the only independent testing base for ERVs/HRVs. Compare apples to apples; similar sized units and airflows. There are huge differences in sensible and latent efficiencies, as well as electrical use. Just because a unit has an ECM motor does not mean it uses less energy. The wattage listed tells the story. Check ease of installation, warranty, filter rating, maintenance requirements and access to tech support. For year round ventilation, an ERV (that is rated as such) is best.
