several years ago I build a three story, all concrete (walls, suspended slabs, roof) house on a mountainside in Alaska that has 175 mph straight line winds.
Hmmmm....the highest wind speeds recorded in Alaska are out in the Aleutians at 139 mph. Over land it is more like 100 mph or less.

The metrics here are a bit iffy.  I know from experience that at around 100 knots, most anemometers simply blow away.

Also know from experience that power pylons over the mountain above Juneau got 80 years of wear the first winter (the replacement power line was built along the water edge).

Are you stating that as a metrologist or a meteorologist?

Cup anemometers used for measuring high wind speeds are capable of indicating well over 200 knots.

Neither. Ustabe a sailor.

The last ship I sailed on was anchored a few miles from Bangor, Wa ... and a stone's throw from the Hood Canal floating bridge ... the night a combination of very high tide and very low pressure blew out the south side of the bridge (this would be ~1978). We also lost our anchor.

We had several investigation teams visit us after and view the logs. Turns out that we had the only surviving anemometer on the Olympic peninsula.

No, the problem isn't the cups ...

I'm sorry, I'm not following the logic behind your sailor story.
