During the compilation of the shoppers checklist we discussed a trouble shooter's checklist.
I am inspired to kick one off now in no small part due to simultaneous posts that complain about electric bills without any supporting data to confirm or exclude trouble with their systems. I'll throw in some thoughts and as before encourage anyone's input:

If you are having trouble with your heat pump (or think you are) and wish to ask for advice here, you will be asked some or all of the following. In a brief desription of your problems, your ability to provide this information greatly increases your odds of success;

1) Where you live
2) Heat loss/gain calculations for your home
3) Brand, size (model), age and type of heat pump
4) Type of loop field (open/closed/vertical/horizontal) size and design parameters
5) Average cost/Kwh of electricity and consumption
6) Entering and leaving air temperatures (EAT, LAT) measured immediately upstream and downstream of the heatpump
7) Entering and leaving water temperatures (EWT, LWT) measured at the geo system
8) Percent of load to be covered by geo and balance point
9) Installer's assessment of your systems operation.
10) Projected operating costs, actual operating cost and previous heating and cooling costs

Items 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 are all easily found operating cost projection reports such as Climatemaster's Geodesign.
Most signs of trouble are when actual experience varies greatly from these projections.

Air temperatures may be taken with an inexpensive probe type thermometer. Water temperatures may be taken with the same instrument if ports are available where water lines go into heat pump or by taping the thermometer to the entering and leaving water lines and insulating it from surrounding air.

It is also helpful to state your question briefly and in short paragraphs. Lengthy blogs make useful information difficult to ferret out.

Finally, YOU MUST read responses and answer questions.

Good Luck,
Joe

Joe, not sure how detailed you want to get, but here are a few ideas:
Day/night thermostat settings.
Slinky, pipe layout (4 pipe) and spacing, length and type of loop pipe.
Is Aux heat enabled, disabled, or otherwise controlled. Aux type (electric, gas).
Thermostat make and model number.
For 5), I would clarify - total electric bill divided by kWh used, if this is what you want. Some people may see the price to compare on their bill and provide that figure.
How they quantify colder, milder, etc., temperature comparison between seasons (degree days, average temperature, etc.)
Alternative energy types and prices (fuel oil, natural gas, propane).

P.S.  It would be nice to receive timely responses from the OP.  Having to go back and re-read pages of replies after several days, or weeks, of waiting for a response is an unnecessary waste of time for people that are trying to help (I know, we don't have to reply if we don't want to).  Some questions may take some time to answer, but other questions can be answered quickly if the OP is motivated.  It's a "help us help you" situation.

I like it as is - make it a sticky.

I've wasted way too much time playing 20 questions with folks unwilling or unable to provide the basics

Geome, I think I asked most of your questions except thermostat and other fuels. See #4 type of loop field and #5 if answered gives me different factors to reach the total.
Curt, appreciate your thoughts. I haven't had a lot of time lately to visit the other forum, if you have a moment and wish to drag the list over there, perhaps the others will have thoughts.

To all we have a recent poster who wiithout knowledge of previous energy use by the building's heat plant or clear representation of electric consumption has decided geo doesn't work. Sometimes emotions can ran very high because the dollars are great and geo is still "new" to many. Further many buyers are the "first kids on the block" to have one and are being quizzed by their family and neighbors. Good and intelligent people can get excited and slightly irrational when they think they have squandered tens of thousands of dollars.
For those reasons I think the previous heating/cooling bills that Geome was hinting at may be a good addition to the list. I will add them to item ten via edit.

I felt obliged to add a final item and mention it here due to its importance....

1. Clare, Michigan
2. lost all heat to home
3. Geomax 2 Model #HTV060A1C01JRK  3yrs old
4. pump and dump

All I am really looking for is a code for the error.  It looks like a "lockout" code but I don't know how to disconnect power to the control as the manual tells me to do.  All I know is it is not working and either is the aux heat.

I need to know where to start.  Can you help me?

I have had a geothermal heat pump since 2002 with a water heater dsh. My water heater started to leak so am going to replace it myself. The dsh is hooked up to the bottom of the water heater with two hoses connected to the drain with no shutoffs on the hoses. How do I disconnect the hoses from the drain on the water heater? Is there small hoses going in the drain that I will have to pull out and reconnect? thanks for your help

Hello, My name is Robert. We are having a problem with a Carrier "Tranquility 27" system involving 3 units on the water loop. Every summer (hottest months) the heat pumps go out on high head PSI.installed three years ago and every summer this happens. Has anyone had intermitant problems like this before? • GPU-1 Model No. -TTH026AGS40ELPS Serial No. - L13781181 • GPU-2 Model No. -TSHO18BGS40ELWS Serial No. - L13781140 • GPU-3 Model No. -TTH026AGS40ELPS Serial No. - L13781180 Service info. • Water flow to the units has been confirmed. (It might be too much). • Water temperature to the loop has at 90 degrees. GPU1 – Water Temp In – 85 Water Temp out – 95 Temp diff = 10 degrees. • GPU 1 – Source water pressure In – 40 Source water pressure out – 33 Press drop = 7 Report 9-16-11 PM that GPU 1 – shut off - flash code 2. (High pressure lock out code2) according to page 61, Safety Feature – CXM/DXM Control.

"start here with problems" meant read the list of questions we might ask and answer as many as you can........then start your own thread with your questions.
Climatemaster (who made your heat pump) and many others have had switches fail, indicating trouble when there was none.
90* EWT may also have spikes from time to time (after long runs) that take unit out of tolerence. Follow up tests wouldn't be patient enough to last an hour.
A WEL or other logger might help.

Please start your own thread for follow up.

Asweetwood,

I'm going be very blunt here: Either do your calculations, or get out of the industry!

If you calculated the amount of GPM required @ xxft of hd to obtain 2ft/sec velocity in ALL parts of the field, you should know whether or not your flush pump has enough capacity. From the fact that you did an install in Series and not parallel, I'm thinking not...

I have a TT 064 with a fault code 4 EAT 67, LAT 73, EWT 56.6, LWT 54.3, psi out 14, psi in 19 I have methanol at 30 percent in my closed loop wells (4 at 300") vertical. The system is 4 years old and has been running perfectly until now. Any ideas?
