Many people have the misconception that being green means using CFL's and energy star appliances. While those are certainly important, there are many other opportunities to be eco-friendly, especially when you are building a new home or commercial building. For example, a company of mine, Hodara Real Estate Development, is partnered with a manufacturing company called OceanSafe Inc. OceanSafe produces steel SIP's (Structural Insulated Panels) which are very eco-friendly. They are made from recycled steel and polystyrene foam, they increase the efficiency of the home by 72% over traditional stick-built homes and build time is cut in half. The list of benefits goes on and while SIPs aren't a new idea, the technology behind them has improved and they truly are the future of construction. Superior R values and reduced build times are going to make SIP construction widespread. SIP's can facilitate moving off the grid by creating a tighter building envelope reducing airflow from outside and therefore reducing heating and cooling energy costs. Has anybody else used steel SIP's in their construction and if so what kind and how was your experience?

Hodara Development,

I am curious. Where did you get that figure of 72%? Did a particular home you know of have some kind of test results indicating it performs at that level?

Mr. Kavala, OceanSafe are manufacturers of Steel SIP's. Their main factory is in Kentucky and another is currently under construction in New Orleans.

Jeff, The 72% comes from tests performed by engineers on homes built from OceanSafe Steel SIP's that were constructed by Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation. I can find the report and send it to you if you like.

wishful thinking, it would be good if they finished their testing for residential home use, they are currently buying refer panels from AIC, Florence, KY.

I will be in NOLA in a few weeks what is the address?

Mr. Kavala, "We [OceanSafe] are the manufactures of the OceanSafe panels. Advanced is the commercial cooler part of the plant. We produce both products at the same location." In addition, Federal City is where the new plat is being constructed.

So which is it real estate development or manufacturing? you now make the claim that you "are" Ocean Safe? Your statements are misleading and not factual

According to their website that is not the case.......... seems they produce all phases:

  • Cold Storage Plants

  • Food Processing

  • U. L. Listed Fire Walls

  • Test Chambers

  • Clean Rooms

  • Residential Buildings

  • Commercial Buildings

  • Lumber Kilns

  • Holding Freezers

  • Holding Coolers

  • Blast Freezer

  • Blast Coolers

  • Blast Chillers

  • Ripening Rooms

  • CA Storage

  • Proofers

Mr. Kavala, I never made any claim that I am OceanSafe. That statement is in quotes for a reason... I, Hodara Real Estate Development, distribute and construct homes made of OceanSafe Steel SIPS.

Hodara;

AIC is owned by Burt Lloyd, you can verify that with Vince Basilice, I would be curious to know why they started a house over 2 years ago on Stafford Pl. , New Orleans and have not gotten past the shell stage, it is an eyesore to the neighborhood

You should ask the owner why they haven't gotten past the shell stage. OceanSafe does not build the homes, they only sell their product to certified OceanSafe builders. In addition since their panels are generally only used for the shell it sounds like they completed their job of supplying panels and either the builder or owner halted construction.

Hodara;

that is a well thought logical explanation ............ , however since I was physically there, saw the OceanSafe sign, with a "for sale" sign, called the OceanSafe phone# and inquired about the "as is" asking price. I have a little more knowledge of the situation. I will be returning there in a few weeks and photograph the sign and post it for your viewing.
